In ancient times it was called Nasso; in 1978 “Naxos” was added to the old name of the city, that was originally just “Giardini”. It is the second Greek colony in the whole Sicily, and today Giardini Naxos owns a vast archeological area with a museum that is part of it.
There are not many countries which can sum up the typical beauties of Sicily like Giardini can do: it is the cradle of ancient, Mediterranean cultures, and also a well-advanced tourist station concerning accommodation services in the south of Italy.
Half way between Messina (39 km) and Catania (40 km) Giardini Naxos can be reached in less than an hour by the airport of Fontanarossa. When you arrive here you can easily go to Taormina (that is just 5 km distant), but also to Messina, to the Etna, to the pine forest of Linguaglossa, to the Alcantara valley with its suggestive gorges, and in the end you can easily reach also the Eolian Islands.
In the last century the economy of this country has considered above all the tourism as its main source: accommodation centers have been built, and the tourism vocation of its coast has been very well exploited.
Today Giardini Naxos is, together with the very close Taormina and Letojanni, one of the most popular bathing places in the Eastern Sicily.
