THE FOUNTAN OF ORION
The fontain of Orion was considered by Bernard Berenson “the most beautiful fontain of the sixteenth century in Europe”. It was commissioned by the Senate to the sculptor Giovan Angelo Montorsoli, the pupil of Michelangelo Buonarroti. It was built to celebrate the first aqueduct in the
city which hold the water of the rivers Camaro and Bordonaro. The aqueduct was started in 1530 and finished in 1547. The fountain has got a pyramidal shape with a polygonal basement where there are eight marine animals made of black stone and on the border of the big basin there are four statues which represent the rivers Camaro, Nilo, Tevere and Ebro that pour the water they have in four amphoras in the basins below.
